No, Really - Houseplants You Can't Kill

If you're anything like me, you're a convicted PLANT KILLER. I don't want to be, but sadly, that is exactly who I am.

Recently, other Happy Slob (http://www.happyslob.com) newsletter subscribers shared their best secrets of finding a houseplant that even the brownest-thumbed Slobbo cannot kill. Here, then, are our highly scientific findings:

1. Air Ferns - ONE PLANT THAT IS AVAILABLE, THAT EVEN YOU CAN NOT KILL IS CALLED AN AIR FERN....IT LITERALLY JUST NEEDS "AIR" I HAVE GROWN MINE FOR YEARS. I ONLY HAVE IT STUCK INTO A HOLE THAT I PUNCHED IN THE BOTTOM OF A DIXIE CUP. I PLACED THE CUP IN A SMALL POT AND FILLED THE SURROUNDING AREA WITH MOSS PURCHASED FROM JOANNE FABRICS AND YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW THAT IT WAS NOT PLANTED IN SOIL....I NEVER WATER AND IT DOES NOT CARE HOW MUCH OR HOW LITTLE SUN IT GETS....I PURCHASED IT IN FLORIDA." (Thanks Colleen)
2. Bamboo Plants - You place the bamboo stalks in a container, surround them with rocks to immobilize them and keep the rocks covered with water. How simple is that! (Thanks to Cheri)
3. Spider Plants - Christina, a houseplant that I've found to be tough to kill is the spider plant (sometimes called an airplane plant). I have ignored this plant for weeks on end, then nearly drowned it, had it in the sunlight and also in a room with poor lighting. It just seems to appreciate whatever attention I show it. Of course, it thrives best when it gets the best conditions, but you might want to give it a try. It's very forgiving. Good luck in your quest.
4. ZZ Plants - At first I thought it was a throwback plant to that hairy 80's rock group, but no. Here's what Joanne had to say: "I love gardening and having houseplants all around my home, but... I can kill just about anything. My daughter gave me a ZZ plant she bought at Walmart one year ago. You only need to water it once a month. And mine has not only survived, it is getting bigger! The actual name is Zamioculcas zamiifolia. But you can do a search on ZZ plant and it will pull up a lot of sites. They go for $10.00 at Walmart. Good luck green thumbing."

So...if you try any of these plants and have success, please post here about it! I know I, for one, need all the help I can get when it comes to keeping plants ALIVE.

I am wonderful at killing houseplants myself and gave up years ago on all but one. My husband gave me a PHILODENDRON a couple of days after we started dating 10½ years ago and it is STILL ALIVE!!!

Because it was so special I have worked hard to keep it alive but they really are hardy. Sometimes mine thrives and sometimes it hangs on to dear life by a leaf but it still lives on!

They like sunshine and fairly regular watering ... which reminds me, I need to go water it!

Regarding the Bamboo plants...I killed mine. In fact, I killed two of them. :0

lol I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one who kills houseplants.

BUT...so far I've had my generic tropical plant for, well, it must be 3 weeks by now - and it's THRIVING!! It's making me believe that deep down inside my thumb somewhere there's at least a greenish tinge. ;)

I killed a bamboo plant that was given to me as a gift...no problem!!!

I was given a philodendron about 15 years ago and it was going great until we moved offices and it took a bad trip down the hill and across town in the back of my husban's pick-up. I brought it home and now............two leaves are trying to root in a glass of water (all that's left...the rest of her (Phyllis) conked out!

The most important thing you have to do is let a plant drain properly. You will save yourself many problems
